Stepping Through: Three Modified Humans Novelettes | A really talented author giving us some backstory on an interesting character in her future world I love this author - she has a wonderful touch in getting into the minds and motivations of her characters, which helps lift her stories out of the simple plot driven tales so common nowadays. That being said, she still manages to move her stories along surprising twists and turns that you honestly don’t see coming. This author always manages to craft her characters with a caring hand and a very real insight into their motivations and internal struggles. I thought Liss’ story was the best one yet in this series. She is faced with the deeply challenging task of having to ‘marry’ the world and consuming relationships deep conditioning has created for her with the one she used to live in with the ties that pull her back. Socioeconomic and political strife of today are carried to new levels with Spilsbury’s deepening characterizations of the triad. Jian, the leader, is older and feels responsible for protecting Liss and Aundrey from mistakes they might make that would force them into more mental conditioning from their corporate owners. Aundrey is young and in love and sees nothing wrong with their conditioning or the need for utter obedience. Liss is the only one who has lived outside the corporation in the normal world and finds it hard to reconcile the two worlds. She passionately loves Jian and Andrey, but doesn’t understand why she ‘sort of’ remembers being married to Mitch. Why is she excited to go to Nova Colony and yet cannot seem to get interested in the fact that it might kill Jian. Liss is a Genetically Modified human, created in a test tube but, unlike her Triad partners,, raised by foster parents in a traditionally-structured human family. However, after she becomes an adult, her creators, Heredis Corp, start to condition her for life within a Triad. Unlike Liss, her Triad partners, Jian & Aundrey, were raised in an artificial & controlled environment within the Corp. which leads to a huge adjustment for Liss herself. Although she is strenuously conditioned to accept & tightly bond with her Triad partners, which she does, she still carries memories of her previous life which included a husband, Mitch.The Triads were created to protect the Heredis Corp.'s huge investments made in the Modifieds by controlling their every move & emotion. As in our time, it's the wealthy who benefit from the extremely expensive procedures and health care has been broken into three categories: Triage 1, 2 & 3. Triage 3 only provides for basic medical care and is the one assigned to the bulk of the population. This leads to riots that are spreading wildly and an incident that results in the deaths of unknown numbers. This theme runs through the entire storyline and personally affects Liss, her Triad & their personal security team. The novel had it all: romance, page turning anticipation, mystery and creative descriptives throughout.The concept of ‘Triads’ as a weaponized solution for absolute togetherness was intriguing, along with the conditioning use of love and physical connection to keep the engineered modifieds bonded to each other—and hence, vulnerable when that bond was challenged by ‘Normals’.I would highly recommend this read for adults who enjoy suspense-filled plots, thrilling sci-fi stories with well developed characters, or the touching emotions of LGBTQ romance. Immunity Cage: A Genetically Engineered Dystopian Thriller (Modified Humans Book 1) | Intelligent and Intriguing This intelligent and talented author places the reader inside the head – and heart - of a genetically modified human – an intriguing position indeed. The characters have depth and wills that keep the plot moving, all amid a dark post pandemic that destroyed the world as we know it. The local scene of Mississauga, Ontario was an added bonus for me.The writing is distinct and clear and the story flows quickly. I literally could not put this novel down. The author’s view of the future is frightening but extremely credible, especially when viewed through our Covid 19 lens. Each of the characters were well drawn and distinctive. The stark differences between the “haves” and the “have nots” are heightened when played against the crumbling outside world that Jian is forced to navigate through in his search for the truth. A great read that left me wanting to read more from this author.
