Things that Blow My Hair Back: Horses
Lancer (left): As soon as I graduated from university and landed a job, I bought Lancer. When I told my mother, her reaction was a despairing, “Oh Louise!” Fortunately, she came to realize that you can’t stand between an addict and their fix. This ‘visual’ was taken about two seconds before Lancer decided that having a camera pointed at him was just too weird. He escaped by running backwards – very fast.
Larry (right): Two years ago, I found myself horseless. An ex-racehorse turned eventer who didn’t want to jump anymore, Larry was the first horse I looked at on the horses-for-sale site. We hit it off right away. I never planned to find out how fast an ex-racehorse can run, but when he sprang it on me a year later, I survived! (Stopping involved pointing him at some trees…)

Rural landscapes
Despite being the most urbanized region in Canada, southern Ontario province has huge areas of beautiful farmland. I live close to a university town in a rural area that’s so pretty, I call it God’s Country. I couldn’t help but secretly showcase it in my Modified Humans books. This ‘visual’ was taken near my house.
Northern lights:
I’ve never seen them in person, but I love this ‘visual’. Even more so when you realize they’re the manifestation of the solar wind skimming across our planet’s magnetic field. Our magnetosphere is what keeps the solar wind from stripping away our atmosphere, and is one of the crucial factors that make life on Earth possible. It’s something I keep in mind when world-building for my Sci-Fi stories.

And Dogs and Books
Dogs
Yogi was a cheerful but headstrong puppy. It took him a year and a half to stop draping himself over my lap every time I sat on the throne. Now he’s still cheerful and headstrong, but a little more polite.Dayna (aka Goldilocks) came to us as an 8-year-old rescue. She made Yogi work hard to stay top dog. Now, balance has been achieved. Mom and Dad are Number 1-A and 1-B in the family pack, not necessarily in that order. Yogi is Number 2, and Dayna is Number 3. One of their doggy jobs is to keep Mom company while she writes.
Good books
I wish I’d kept track of all the books I’ve read over my life. Thousands. Because we moved a lot, I had to cull often. These are the treasures that remain from the paper days. There are actually several hundred books here; the paperbacks are crammed in two layers deep. Nowadays, I read mostly e-books, and use an iPad because I can have Kindle, Kobo and pdfs all on one device. Subscribing to Bookbub has turned me into a crazy person – all those e-books, discounted or even free, and they don’t take up any space!
