My writing career
It’s finally happening! After a lifetime of preparation, I’m launching my writing career! Writing for myself and my writers’ group isn’t the same as a writing career. A writing career makes it official. A writing career means I’m putting my work out there for the whole world to see.
Writing Career: the Skills
The first step in getting to the point of a writing career was learning how to write scenes and dialogue. That part was easy. The second step was learning how to write a story. That wasn’t easy at all. My writers’ group used to say that I couldn’t plot my way out of a paper bag. I think it came from working in a lab. In the laboratory, life is dictated by rules and Standard Operating Procedures. You have to think analytically. You find the truth through mathematics.To write a novel, you have to be able to think freely, indulge your imagination. It wasn’t till I learned to let my subconscious have a voice that plots arose out of the murk. Letting go of my critical mind finally allowed me to write stories.
I’m still sort of slow at it. Stephen King doesn’t have to worry about me muscling in on his market share. But, hey! I’m doing it!
The Adventure
So like the lady in the picture, I’m embarking on an adventure. It’s exciting. And scary. I still sweat at some of the things my subconscious insists that my characters must do. What will my former co-workers say when they read this stuff? “But Louise seemed so normal!” After all, these are the people I wrote SOPs for. How to rinse feed testing bottles so the lids don’t explode on their way to the wash. How to analyze sulfa drugs in swine urine.
But really, what’s so abnormal about inventing a hero whose job is to stand between humanity and death by pandemic? And bad guys who want to wipe humanity from the face of the earth? The fact that love triangles are used as a form of control, maybe that is a little out-there. As for the sex – well, let’s face it. There’s more to life than analyzing pig pee.
Two hundred years from now, the world may seem a lot like today.
But different…Survivor is the first book in my series, The GMH Project (Genetically Modified Humans). I hope you like it!

In subsequent blog posts, you’ll discover that I unpublished Survivor and replaced it with Immunity Bond, Book 2 of my Modified Humans series. I decided to change the series name from The GMH Project to Modified Humans. Book 1 of the series, Immunity Cage, includes some material from Survivor, and creates the protagonist’s back story.
